Clinical Effects of Parenteral Piroxicam in Acute musculoskeletal Disorders



Abstract
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. are widely used in the treatment of musculoskeletal disord-rs, usually as an oral formulation. In an acute condition it might be an advantage to initiate the treat ent with a parenteral"formulation. Piroxicam parenteral is available as an, intramuscular dosage form ith a strength of 20mg/m1.
Thirty patients with acute musculoskeletal injery were treated with short-term use of intramusc lar piroxicam followed by oral administration when necessary. There were 15 ankle sprains, 3 finger spr. ins, 2 knee sprains, 4 acute back pains, 4 supraspinatus tendinitis, and 2 Achilles tendinitis.
Spontaneous pain and pain on movement were reduced average 86% and 77% respectively in al patients. And tenderness, swelling and restriction of joint motion were reduced 69%, 64%, and 69% res tectively. In term of global assessment, all pateints were excellent and good by physician, and 28 pati nts (93%) were excellent and good by patient, and 2 patients were fair. In term of global assessment of tol-ration with physician and patient, all patients were good and excellent. There were no side effects ex ept transient pain on injection area in 2 patients.
In conclusion, the efficacy and toleration of the short-term use of intramucular piroxicam in patient of acute musculoskeletal injury were excellent.
